Rosebud Llamas Utah

Inviting you to go great places with llamas!

A llama pack trip in the San Rafael Swell

The San Rafael Swell, Ashley National Forest-South Unit, and Browns Park are three uniquely beautiful, relatively undiscovered areas in Utah. Experiencing their wilderness areas with llamas and knowledgeable guides makes getting there and being there just that much better. Hiking with llamas is relaxing, healthy exercise . . . without the strain of carrying a heavy backpack. And llamas allow you to eat real food, not freeze-dried!  Our llama activities are all owner-operated.

We offer llama activities of all kinds by appointment. This gives us a better opportunity to accommodate your schedule. All of our activities are gentle on the land and feature some of the cleanest air in the nation.

Llamas have been the helpful companions of man and woman for over 6,000 years. They were one of the first animals to be domesticated. Llamas played a critical role in the economy and religion of the Inca Empire, and over the centuries, Andes mountain communities have revered them as a source of transport and wool for clothing. They are intelligent, curious, sure-footed, and have a naturally gentle nature. Once lead trained, they are responsive enough to be led by a child. When startled, they tend to keep their heads, adding to their reliability on the trail. They are agile enough to go almost anywhere humans can go without the use of their hands. The llama's soft, padded foot will leave no more trace of their passing than yours.

Rosebud Llamas Utah offers activities with llamas in four remarkable areas in Utah:

  • Llama Pack Trips and Backpacker Support Trips take place in the San Rafael Swell in the central part of the state, and in the South unit of the Ashley NF and Browns Park on the Green River, both in northeastern Utah.
  • Day Hikes with Llamas take you either to the South Unit of the Ashley NF or the Red Creek Narrows near our home-base in Fruitland, in western Duchesne County.
  • Farm Visits are educational, interactive, and include lunch. Learn about llamas, feed them treats, take them for short walks. Facilities are wheelchair accessible.
  • Llama Packing Clinics and Training Trips are fun, hands-on experiences that give you practical knowledge about packing with llamas and caring for them in the backcountry. A variety of curricula is available, from a one-day clinic at Rosebud Llamas Utah and nearby trails to a multi-day experience where you (and your trained but "green" llamas, if you wish) learn "on-the-job" on a real-life pack trip in one of our permit areas (above). We also offer one-day clinics to help you learn how to train your own llama to accept basic health care and maintenance. Whether he or she packs or not, llamas can and should be taught to stand calmly with minimal restrain for at least toenail trimming, shots, grooming, and shearing, as well as to be haltered and led easily. We can help.
  • Rosebud Guest House is available for rent at reasonable rates by Rosebud Llamas Utah guests, as well as other visitors to the area. The Guest House is pet-friendly beyond the usual--not only do we welcome dogs and cats, but we have extra pastures so you can bring and enjoy your horses or llamas on the many trails in the area.
