Charlie
is known by anyone who has met him as “the kissing llama.” When we met
him in 1999, he was unhappily living alone and badly in need of care,
so we were glad to give him a new home. He actually cried (for joy,
we’re sure) when he first caught sight of his new herd mates. He was
allegedly around four years old, but was a blank page in terms of
training and experience. As we started to work with him, we noticed he
would often touch our cheek with his nose when presented with something
new, as if looking for reassurance. A little “click and reward” was all
it took to get him to respond to, “Charlie kiss.” He has learned
everything quickly and is a solid member of the pack string. He
successfully completed his first pack trial in 2005, putting him on the
road to certification as an Advanced Pack Llama. He’s real crowd
pleaser. It’s looking like he’ll be the subject of our first attempt at
training a llama to pull a cart. (1995?)
