Fernando
was trained, but “green” when we bought him in 1997 to be a buddy to
weanling Zorro, our first male cria. His paternal great-grandfather was
the famed Dr. Doolittle, but a sense of humor is his trademark, not
wool. When we call the llamas every evening to bring them back from the
pastures, Fernando always comes running with the rest. But some days he
comes with a twinkle in his eye, ready to tease and run away a few
times before standing to be haltered. He’s a tremendously willing,
reliable packer and received his “Advanced Pack Llama” certification in
2002. He’s been on every pack trip we’ve ever taken and most day hikes.
