Fusco
means “dusky” in Spanish, but personality rather than color should have
been the focus of his naming process. Like his mother Baez, who he
resembles greatly, he’s his own person. He was born totally comfortable
with humans. He’s extremely easy to care for, as a result—I can cut his
toenails while he’s lying on his side, sunbathing. He’s full of
self-confidence, despite the efforts of all those higher on the herd
“totem pole” to keep him in his place. He took his first commercial
pack trip in 2002 and did well enough from the beginning that he went
on the Kings Peak hike that year, albeit with a light load. We look for
good things from Fusco. (1998)
