Maya
is a true black llama, Allende’s first cria and the only girl born into
the Rosebud Llamas Utah herd. She got a late start packing because she
volunteered eagerly to be “nanny” for Allende’s and Baez’s second and
third babies. When each of her four half-siblings were born, hers was
the first nose to touch and inspect the newborn, and she waited
anxiously outside the barn for the new baby to emerge after its first
good meal. But she’s getting trail time now on conditioning hikes and
trips that include “the girl string.” She loves back scratches and
other forms of attention and is always near, whether we’re doing chores
or people are here to visit the llamas. (1997)
